A converted hand penalty in the 17th minute of added time gives Iraq further hope of taking part in the 2026 World Cup.

Amir Al-Ammari, who plays in the Polish league for KS Cracovia from Krakow, ensured his team won 2-1 (0-0) in the second leg against the United Arab Emirates (first leg 1-1) in the Asian qualification and thus took part in the intercontinental play-offs.

Iraq has only ever taken part in the 1986 World Cup finals in Mexico. Bolivia, New Caledonia and the Democratic Republic of Congo had previously qualified for the intercontinental play-offs, in which six teams will fight for two final places in March. The two remaining places go to two teams from the qualifiers in North and Central America.
