A 44-year-old Frenchman faces two years in prison for a violent robbery in a home in the Pittelo district of Assen on June 3 this year. Nine months of this should be conditional. The resident was assaulted and robbed of money, a safe with gold and silver and a car.
The public prosecutor demanded nine months in prison against the co-suspect, a 37-year-old man from Assen. The Frenchman was visiting a friend that day, who was temporarily taken care of by the later victim in his home.
The resident was home at the time. The Frenchman entered, together with someone who called himself Patrick. That later turned out to be a false name.
The 44-year-old man started using drugs and became aggressive. According to the public prosecutor, the man attacked the resident. He was helped by ‘Patrick’. He held the victim.
The 44-year-old suspect hit the resident several times in the head. The men fled with money, telephone and the resident’s car. The victim did not notice that a safe containing gold and silver had disappeared from his home.
According to the public prosecutor, stealing the safe was a premeditated plan. During the visit of the two men, the front door was opened for their 37-year-old accomplice Assenaar, so that he could steal the safe without being seen. The force used in the home was not part of the plan. According to the prosecutor, this was not an average home invasion, rather a situation that got out of hand. “While we’re at it, let’s finish it well,” the suspects are said to have thought.
The items were stolen during a visit to friends, the prosecutor said. “Here the host’s hospitality was abused. His kindness was punished with a firm slap in the face.” The victim had injuries to his face and wrist.
According to the prosecutor, the 37-year-old man from Assen can only be held responsible for the theft of the safe, not for the violence in the home. Both suspects have lengthy criminal records.
The third man, who called himself Patrick and tightly held the resident, did not have to appear in court today. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) has yet to make a decision about his prosecution.
The verdict in this case will be announced on December 2.
