Newly created position
Jahn Regensburg has presented a new sports director. The former RB official Dr. Alexander Schmalhofer will take over the newly created position from this Tuesday after a lengthy search by the club’s management. Achim Beierlorzer had to resign from the third division club’s sporting leadership position more than a month ago. According to CEO Oliver Hein, with Schmalhofer the SSV has gained “a proven football expert for this key position”.
The Munich native was active in the RB cosmos as development director from 2021 to 2025 and oversaw the strategic development of game philosophy, game analysis and data analysis at the Leipzig, Brazil and New York locations. Previously, Schmalhofer was chief analyst at Red Bull Salzburg and at training club FC Liefering for several years. “Due to his character, his extensive qualifications and his understanding of football and people management, Alexander Schmalhofer is a very good fit for SSV Jahn and the vacant areas of responsibility,” explained Hein.
Regensburg’s commercial director Philipp Hausner said: “We are convinced that Alexander Schmalhofer, as the new sports director, will significantly drive forward and be responsible for the sporting and sports strategy realignment. His high level of professional expertise, coupled with his concept-based and analytical way of working, his previous experience in professional football and his network are valuable factors in achieving our sporting goals. He will work closely with the coaching team, staff and players of the professional team, the Jahnschmiede youth department, his direct team in the office and the management work together.”
Schmalhofer emphasized in a club statement: “SSV Jahn is an ambitious, concept- and values-based professional football club that I have followed in recent years. I can personally identify strongly with this approach. I am therefore really looking forward to this exciting task and to a close, trusting and successful collaboration with everyone involved. Together with a strong team, I would like to do my part to help SSV Jahn – starting with the Jahn professionals – in the coming years to develop further.”
