Expanding paid parking should provide additional parking spaces for residents, according to the municipality. They say this means that local residents don’t have to spend as long looking for a parking space.
From Monday to Saturday you now pay € 1.66 per hour during the day. It remains free after 7 p.m. and on Sundays. People who live or work here can apply for a parking permit for €38.60 for six months.
According to the municipality, it is difficult to find a parking space in large parts of North. “In neighborhoods without paid parking, cars often remain parked for a long time. This concerns, for example, cars of people who travel further to Schiphol or the center. With paid parking, more places become available for residents and fewer cars drive around looking for a spot.”
Parking nuisance
A number of Northerners recognize this parking nuisance. “It’s always full of cars here,” says a woman at the Banne Centrum shopping center. “They are everywhere. On the sidewalks, for example. There is no more space, so I hope that paid parking will create more space.”
Yet there are of course also people who are not happy with the change. “I don’t like it,” says a motorist in Tuindorp Oostzaan. “You have more of the idea that you are a cash cow. They are just looking for ways to raise money there at the Stopera, I think.”
