In October, Russia caused major damage to one of Ukraine’s most important gas producers with a large-scale air strike. Russia is carrying out such attacks more often in the run-up to winter. Last winter, Russian bombing halved national gas production, according to the Ukrainian government.

The agreement covers the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplied by the United States from next month until March 2026. The agreement between Greek national gas company DEPA Commercial and Ukrainian gas company Naftogaz marks “an essential step in strengthening regional energy cooperation and European energy security,” according to a joint statement.

The deal follows a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens. The agreement makes it possible “to support Ukraine in a difficult winter,” according to Mitsotakis and Zelensky. According to the Ukrainian president, winter poses “an enormous challenge” for the country. “A winter under Russian drones and missiles, under daily attacks,” he said.
