Part of the Leyhoeve residential care center in Tilburg is still closed. Not all residents can return home yet. Damage experts will examine the extent of the damage after Saturday’s fire during the morning. Two people suffered serious injuries, two others minor. It is not known how the victims are doing on Sunday morning.
A fire broke out in the Leyhoeve residential care center around five o’clock on Saturday afternoon. Mostly elderly people live in the complex, some of whom are independent and others who need help. The fire started in a meter cupboard on the second floor. A water pipe also broke, causing water damage.
The emergency services came en masse to the residential care complex. Although the fire ultimately wasn’t too bad, about two hundred residents had to be evacuated. The police mobile unit was present to assist with evacuation. The residents were very frightened when they suddenly saw a whole procession of emergency services entering the parking lot. The residents were accommodated in the nearby Van der Valk Hotel.
Some were allowed to go home again
Many sheltered residents were picked up at the hotel by family and friends. Some of the residents were allowed to return home on Saturday evening. The group of residents who need structural care were also largely allowed to return.
More clarity during the afternoon
Residents of many self-contained apartments had to sleep somewhere else on Saturday night. Some spent the night at the Van der Valk Hotel. The municipality of Tilburg says that shelter has been arranged until at least Monday.
Residents who cannot return yet are advised to consult their home contents insurance. Many apartments in the building are independent living units, meaning that residents must arrange matters with their own insurance.
During the afternoon, more will become clear about the extent of the damage and when all residents can return.
