Millions of children around the world have the dream of playing professional football. Han Willhoft-King was close to realizing this – and then chose a completely different path.

Han Willhoft-King was considered a great promise in English football. The 19-year-old went through the academies of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, trained with the professionals under Pep Guardiola and played for England’s U16 national team. But instead of pursuing a professional career, he chose a different path – studying law at the renowned University of Oxford.

“I don’t know many people who, if they reached Man City’s U21s, would stop at that point,” Willhoft-King told the British Guardian. But the midfielder drew a line in the sand – after several serious injuries and growing dissatisfaction with everyday life as a young professional. “I always felt underchallenged in football,” he explained. “I needed something different and Oxford excited me.”

The son of a philosopher and an architect says today: “I wanted something that would last over the next 10 to 15 years. Studying offers me this platform.”
