Although he couldn’t play, captain Joshua Kimmich was the spokesman for the DFB team’s victory in Luxembourg. But other national players also went first.

William Laing reports from Luxembourg

The German national team only won their away game in Luxembourg with a lot of effort. In the end it was 2-0 from the perspective of the DFB team, who had previously struggled for long periods of the game against self-sacrificing hosts. One of the reasons for the weak performance: Joshua Kimmich, the team’s captain, was unavailable due to injury. The absence of the leader on the field was clearly noticeable in the team, which at times seemed headless.

Nevertheless, Kimmich apparently did everything in the run-up to the game to support his teammates despite his absence. As David Raum revealed after the final whistle in the arena catacombs, the Bayern star came to him again before the game, but also to the other DFB professionals. Kimmich is a player who “gives everyone something that he expects from them,” said Raum and also revealed that Kimmich “then also addressed words to the team again before the game.”

However, Raum did not reveal the exact content of Kimmich’s speech to the team. “We can’t always tell you everything,” he blocked the question, but emphasized once again that Kimmich had communicated his expectations to the other national players. Raum also confirmed that the captain “found good words” in his speech and “gave everyone the right message.”

Striker Nick Woltemade also gave an insight into the dynamics within the team around the Luxembourg game. It’s not the case that only Kimmich “stands up there and communicates,” said the goalscorer, whose brace had given Germany three points in the small neighboring country. There are also many other players in the team who could take on responsibility, said Woltemade.

The Newcastle professional then immediately revealed who the spokesmen besides Kimmich were in Luxembourg. “Jona talked a lot,” Woltemade referred to stand-in captain Jonathan Tah. “David always talks a lot. Waldi is always one to lead the way.” This meant David Raum and Waldemar Anton, both of whom were on the field for the entire duration of the game.

In this context, Woltemade made it clear again: “I think we have enough people who want to move forward, who can move forward.” This doesn’t just apply to Kimmich. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old, along with the rest of the team, is hoping that the captain can be back on the pitch on Monday. Germany will have a showdown against Slovakia in Leipzig for their direct World Cup ticket. A task that would certainly be easier to accomplish with Kimmich as a pioneer on the pitch.
