This is evident from a letter to residents that NH has seen, and is confirmed by Ymere. While waiting for the wrecking ball, serious defects such as leakage, mold and drafts will also be addressed, the housing association promises.

It has been known for almost three years that the neighborhood with 78 homes will be demolished to make room for new construction. Yet no concrete date has yet been set, and that makes dozens of residents uncertain and angry.

Held hostage in a run-down house

Some want to stay and return to the new building later, but the rest have felt hostage in a dilapidated house for a long time. When can they move and where?

It is teeming with mice, and because their houses are poorly insulated, they pay a lot of money in energy. In addition, the moisture attracts fungi and slugs, which hijack the homes continuously.

Neighborhood in action

Some of the residents decided to take action. They covered their neighborhood with flags and banners and marched last summer to the Ymere office around the corner to seek redress.

“We are going to show our face there. Show that we are more than a house number and a name,” said Jessica van Brienen, who lives on Nassaustraat with her 15-year-old son.
