Contactless payments are becoming increasingly popular, including for grocery shopping. With Rewe Pay, the supermarket chain is now bringing its own digital payment system onto the market. It promises more convenience, faster processes and a direct connection to the bonus program.

How it works

Rewe Pay is a new mobile payment system that Rewe introduced across its markets in July 2025. It allows customers to pay for their purchases directly via the Rewe app by direct debit, thus providing a contactless alternative without the need for a checking or credit card. In order to use the service, the checking account must first be linked once. To do this, after depositing the debit card details in the app, the customer must pay once at the checkout with this card and provide a signature. This will make this happen SEPA-Direct debit mandate activated, as the supermarket chain itself reports.

For future purchases, all you need to do is open the app, verify via PIN, Face ID or fingerprint and scan the QR code displayed at the checkout or self-checkout. The amount due will then be debited from your checking account within one to three working days. Technically, Rewe Pay only works with German debit cards. International credit or debit cards are not supported. The app itself sets at least iOS 16 or Android 9 and is available free of charge.

Benefits for customers

A key advantage of Rewe Pay is its close integration with the new Rewe bonus system, which has replaced the previous Payback program since the end of 2024. As soon as a purchase is made via the app, the system automatically takes into account all activated coupons and discount campaigns. The so-called bonus subscription, a digital loyalty program with exclusive benefits, is also fully integrated.

Rewe Pay is also available in all participating markets, both at classic cash registers and at self-checkout terminals. However, it is not yet possible to use it in the Rewe online shop or for delivery orders. The option to withdraw cash via the app at the checkout is also excluded. The function only applies to payment in the local market.

Conclusion

There are no additional fees for users. Anyone who is technically equipped and regularly shops at Rewe can not only save time with the system, but also benefit from targeted price advantages. However, the prerequisite is the willingness to use the Rewe app and provide personal bank details.
