Luis Rubiales was pelted with eggs at the launch of his book about the kissing scandal. Now it turns out: the attacker came from his family.
An unusual incident occurred at a book launch in Madrid: Luis Rubiales, Spain’s former association president, was pelted with eggs – and the alleged attacker comes from his own family. As Rubiales confirmed to the news site Periodista Digital, the man was his uncle Luis Rubén Rubiales. The TV actor is the younger brother of Rubiales’ father.
According to a report in the newspaper “El País”, the thrower shouted “scoundrel” before throwing the eggs. “He threw eggs at me because he was disturbed, I can’t explain it,” said Rubiales. He also explained in the sports newspaper “Mundo Deportivo”: “I attacked him because I thought something would happen to a family in the audience.”
A video circulating in Spanish media shows several people intervene and hold Rubiales back as he tries to attack his uncle. In the reporting, a family conflict is suspected as a possible trigger.
Rubiales made international headlines in August 2023 after he kissed player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth at the award ceremony in Sydney after Spain’s World Cup victory. Hermoso later explained that this had happened without her consent. Shortly thereafter, Rubiales resigned. FIFA banned him for three years. He was also sentenced to a fine for sexual aggression.
In his book “Matar a Rubiales” (“Killing Rubiales”), the 48-year-old describes his view of the kiss and speaks of a media and political conspiracy against him. Rubiales said: “I will not change. What happened is done; I did not lie. I am not thinking of returning to the Federation.”
