The President of the Senate attacks the national team coach after his statements at the end of the match won against Moldova, in which he pointed the finger at the protest of the approximately 500 Italian fans present in Chisinau. “You cannot say `shame’ to a spectator who boos” – the words of the second-largest state official -. “But I don’t want to start a controversy: Gattuso is right when he says that in view of the hope of going to the World Cup we must unite and support the national team, but even the boos of the spectators can be a stimulus as long as they are not violent.”

It is not the first time that La Russa attacks the current coach. A few hours after Spalletti’s dismissal and Gattuso’s appointment, the President of the Senate gave an interview in which he questioned the FIGC’s choice: “We chose Gattuso and therefore long live Gattuso, I hope it goes well” – La Russa said -. “However, when Gravina says that Gattuso is a symbol of our football, I say that it is not exactly correct. If anything, it is Buffon, who is perhaps behind this decision. So it would have been better to make Buffon a selector, there is no need to be a coach to select a national team. The symbols of our football are others, many are not coaches, like Totti and Del Piero, then there are Cannavaro, Nesta, Pippo Inzaghi… It is not right to consider Gattuso the symbol of our football. Our football it’s not Ringhio’s football, but it’s the football of Rivera, Baggio, Del Piero, Zenga. Well, why not Zenga?”. Very harsh words to which Gattuso himself had replied in the presentation press conference: “I don’t want to start a controversy with La Russa, I just hope to change his mind and be able to achieve everyone’s common goal: bringing Italy back to the World Cup”.
