Karianne Kas from Aerdenhout is the coordinator of the many volunteers who guided the boys in the asylum center last year. “In a way it is a shame that the boys are leaving. You naturally build a bond with each other, we will miss them.”
Going to swimming lessons together
For example, the volunteers cook together with the boys on working days. “We celebrate birthdays together and go to swimming lessons. We have a lot of fun contact. I hope that the boys will look back on the past year with a good feeling,” says Kas.
Kas understands the COA’s decision: “There are plenty of places for boys, but there are really too few places for girls. So they have to do something about that.”
The volunteers will soon welcome the girls in the shelter with open arms. It is not yet entirely clear whether there will be a special farewell for the boys. Kas: “The news is still fresh, of course. But we will see what we can do with it. The boys are now really part of the neighborhood. We greet each other on our bikes.”
