Moerdijk is a place with a lot of industry that is crucial for the economy. This is what outgoing Minister Sophie Hermans of Climate and Green Growth said prior to the weekly cabinet meeting.

The village of Moerdijk may have to make way for expansion of industry and energy production. “There is a port that is incredibly important, also for our energy production.” Hermans emphasizes that the final decision on Moerdijk has not yet been made.

She will discuss this with her fellow ministers, the local government and the residents. Hermans says about the residents: “They also told us, ‘We don’t like it, but give us clarity’. I understand that call incredibly well.”

These are the plans
Three new energy stations must be built to continue to provide everyone with electricity in the future.

There will also be high-voltage lines and a transformation station around those energy stations. These plans require 450 hectares of land, approximately 630 football fields. Construction of the energy stations is expected to start in 2028 and be completed in 2033.

The municipal council will make a decision on the proposal on November 19. On December 1, the province and the national government will make a decision about the future of Moerdijk. Hermans talks about ‘a preference or a direction’ that must then be made known to the world.

‘Hard guarantees’
The municipality of Moerdijk wants firm guarantees about, among other things, financial compensation for residents if it is decided that the village will disappear. According to the municipality, it could take until 2035 before a final plan is drawn up.
