The scammers are becoming increasingly creative with fake emails and false messages. And an unexpected phone call from someone pretending to be an employee of a bank, government service, health insurance company or card stop can be a red light. Scammers often obtain private information on the internet.
Many scammers also work from abroad. Police services in other countries all too often encounter the unwillingness of internet providers to cooperate in investigations. Francis Nolf, Criminal Investigation Department PZ Grensleie: “You can use the internet anonymously. It will be very difficult for us to find a criminal via IP addresses or domain names. Keep that in mind. Be doubly careful with people from whom you do not expect emails or WhatsApp.”
