An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale occurred in the village of Zeerijp in Groningen on Thursday night. This is the third heaviest earthquake ever measured in Groningen and the heaviest earthquake this year in the northern province. That reports the KNMI.
The earthquake occurred around 1 am. According to RTV Noord Hundreds of reports were received by the regional channel from people who felt the earthquake in various places in the province.
Several people speak of a loud bang, followed by heavy shocks, causing items to fall over. Someone writes to the channel that he was in the car and lost grip on the road due to the severity of the earthquake.
Although gas extraction in Groningen has been stopped for over a year, earthquakes can still occur. The village of Zeerijp, where the earthquake occurred, has previously suffered from earthquakes related to gas extraction in the province. There is a chance that residents of the province will still experience aftershocks.
