The FC Bayern women showed two faces in the 3-2 win against Arsenal FC. Klara Bühl was instrumental in turning the game around after being 2-0 down. The key player went ahead and prepared all three goals.
At halftime of the Champions League game between FC Bayern Frauen and FC Arsenal on Wednesday evening, there was nothing to indicate a happy ending for the Munich team: in front of 15,407 spectators in the large arena, coach José Barcala’s team left a sluggish, uninspired impression in the first 45 minutes and were inferior to the British in pretty much all respects. The 0-2 deficit at the break was deserved, improvement is only in sight for the boldest optimists.
Completely different face after the break
But after the move everything changed. The team that initially seemed to have the 7-1 defeat at FC Barcelona stuck in their heads suddenly showed their good side. Suddenly the Munich women were present, courageously entered into duels and also set playful accents. The result: The team turned the game around and ended up winning 3-2.
Barcala seemed to have found the right words at half-time. But the coach also has several experienced, highly gifted players in the team that he can rely on in such situations: “This type of game, this reaction, defines us as a team,” said the Spaniard.
Klara Bühl earns the title of “Player of the Game”
One person still stood out, even if her name didn’t appear on the scoreboard as a scorer: Klara Bühl. The 24-year-old national player, who was also voted “Player of the Match,” was the outstanding player. She went ahead and assisted on all three goals. “You still can’t quite believe what happened,” said the Lower Franconian immediately after the game. “It was very tough to sit like that at half-time. But we drew the right conclusions and talked about the right things.”
Above all, she herself. The already physically strong 24-year-old was very present, took on every duel and, with a lot of speed, ensured a lot of movement forward. At the latest when substitute Alara scored the next goal (67′), everyone in the stadium felt that there was still something in it. Pernille Harder (80th) and captain Glódís Viggósdóttir (86th) finally scored the goals for victory.
Arena as an additional Motivational injection
“The goal gives us a tailwind, but also the spectators in the stadium,” said Bühl about the fans who helped ensure the successful comeback. And in the large stadium, which always serves as an additional source of motivation for Klara Bühl in particular: “It gives me a lot of energy to play in this stadium.”
So the premier class evening still caused great emotions. “I think a win like this is extremely good, especially in the table, but also for our self-confidence that we can keep up and play at this level,” said Bühl. And thanks to his key player, Coach Barcala took away a very important insight: “We can accept if we suffer if the opponent is better, but we have to stay calm, stay united and tackle the difficulties together.”
