Atlético Madrid’s women lose their Champions League game on Wednesday. But that is not the only setback for the Spaniards.
Shocking moment in the Women’s Champions League: In the game between Atlético Madrid and Juventus Turin, Atlético’s Andrea Medina fell unconscious in the second half. The defender received her opponent’s knee in the head during a tackle in the 73rd minute. Medina remained unconscious on the ground. The linesman immediately recognized the situation and rushed to her aid. The referee and her teammates and opponents also ran to her.
The paramedics treated Medina a short time later and transported her from the field. Atlético Madrid then spoke of a traumatic head injury that the defender suffered. “She was taken to the hospital for further examination,” it said in a statement.
Disney+ commentator Jacqui Oatley was shocked by the scenes in the stadium. “This is terrible. We have just commented on Atlético Madrid’s game in the Champions League against Juventus for Disney+. Andrea Medina received immediate and lengthy treatment before being carried off the pitch. We wish her all the best and hope she gets well again soon,” she wrote on X.
Teammate Carmen Menayo confirmed after the game that the situation was better now. “She needs to undergo further examinations, but I think she’s fine. That’s the most important thing of all,” she explained in the mixed zone.
In the end, Atlético Madrid lost the game 1-2, although the Spaniards took the lead in the 39th minute. But shortly before the break, Juve equalized and made it 2-1 in the second half through Barbara Bonansea, which the Italians defended successfully in the end. In the table, Atlético is in tenth place (out of 18) and Juventus is in seventh place.
