(toskanews) – Car-Ts represent a personalized therapy that acts directly on the patient’s immune system to recognize and destroy diseased cells. An innovation that offers the possibility of treatment to patients with oncohaematological pathologies such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma who have relapsed after one or more conventional therapies.

At the Humanitas Research Hospital in Rozzano, research and experimentation, supported by important scientific data, have opened new clinical paths and at the same time given greater hope to those starting such a complicated path.

«It is an immunotherapy that is built starting from the T lymphocytes of our patients, therefore it is a living therapy, which thanks to progress in genetic engineering manages to arm the cells against a specific target of lymphoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and some other oncohaematological diseases» explains Dr. Stefania Bramanti, Head of the Cellular Therapy and CAR-T Section of the IRCCS Istituto Clinico Humanitas, among the structures associated with Aiop Lombardia, the association which represents 107 accredited private healthcare facilities operating in the area, chaired by Michele Nicchio, and which recently launched a communication campaign to talk about the excellence of healthcare in Lombardy.

A new path of treatment which also means new perspectives for patients. «The results obtained – continues Bramanti – after approximately four years of experience with Car-T therapy confirm the effectiveness that the literature demonstrates in the various fields of application. In our experience today it is possible to offer this treatment to more patients, compared to the beginning, with greater peace of mind and familiarity in managing the complication.” The scope of Car-T is expanding.

«If we move into different areas, within experimental protocols, we can talk about Car-T for other pathologies, for example for oncological diseases, understood as solid tumors, such as renal carcinoma or serious autoimmune diseases that do not respond to standard treatments». The possibility of providing a new frontier of care remains the greatest satisfaction for the doctor. «It’s a revolution – concludes Bramanti – because we can offer a path to healing where until a few years ago we were forced to say that there was no longer a therapeutic space».
