The organization of the Museum Prize chooses a different theme every year, in order to give different types of museums a chance to win. This year the theme of the election was ‘the multisensory museum’: here visitors can experience the exhibition with multiple senses at the same time. Museums where you can not only look, but also hear, smell, feel and sometimes even taste.

All these experiences come together in the Bakery Museum De Oude Bakkerij in Medemblik. “A significant step forward and recognition,” says museum director Jacco Spil. “We are in the Champions League of the museum world.”

Bakery Museum leaves big names behind

“The profit of the Bakery Museum de Oude Bakkerij is a wonderful example of how small can be big,” says Cathelijne Broers, director of the Cultural Fund. “As a family business, they managed to reach the whole of the Netherlands with a strong local voting campaign. A deserved winner, with a beautiful dream: keeping the age-old baking craft alive for everyone.”

Other nominees were the Drents Museum from Assen and the NEMO Science Museum from Amsterdam. They will not go home empty-handed: for every vote they receive one euro, which gives them a total of 11,750 euros and 7,419 euros.
