It was an almost historic abrasion for Alexander Zverev just a week and a half ago: hampered by a swollen ankle, Germany’s best tennis player suffered a painful 0:6, 1:6 defeat against the Italian Jannik Sinner at the Turin Masters in Paris. The Hamburger had not lost so clearly since 2014.
Now the Hamburg native has the chance for revenge against the world number two at the ATP Finals in Turin. But: Sinner is in absolute top form, is additionally motivated by the competition for number one in the world with Carlos Alcaraz and also enjoys home advantage in Turin. “If I’m not 100 percent fit, then I have no chance at all. We saw that in Paris,” said Zverev before the second group game.

Before the match – By the way, Zverev can of course win against Sinner, the last success was just a while ago: In September 2023, the Hamburg native knocked the South Tyrolean out of the tournament in the round of 16 of the US Open with 6:4, 3:6, 6:2, 4:6 and 6:3. Since then there have been four defeats in a row. Sinner has won five out of a total of nine meetings so far.
Before the match – Physically, Zverev actually seems to be feeling better after visiting the doctor who had already operated on him for the serious ligament tear in his right ankle in 2022. The 2021 Olympic champion assured that he was feeling good after his two-set win at the start of the prestigious tournament against the American Ben Shelton.
