Irish hurling hero DJ Carey54, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Carey pleaded guilty in an Irish district court to ten counts of fraud. He cheated people out of money by pretending to be a cancer patient between 2014 and 2022.
Carey asked for money for cancer treatments, even though she didn’t have cancer. In this way, the man managed to acquire almost 400,000 euros for himself.
Carey scammed a total of 22 people. Among them was one of Ireland’s richest entrepreneurs Denis O’Brienwhich gave Carey over €125,000.
During police questioning, Carey said that she had made up the story about the cancer to buy herself more time. The man’s business had failed and he had considerable debts.
To make the story believable, Carey taped the iPhone charger cord to her nose like an oxygen mustache and snapped a picture of herself in bed. He shared this sample and begged people for money for “cancer treatments”.
When the brazen scam was finally revealed, Carey apologized to everyone she had taken money from. He has paid back around 44,000 of almost 400,000 euros.
Carey is one of Ireland’s most famous hurling players. He has won five All-Ireland titles and received numerous individual awards.
