Vinzenz Geiger goes into the new season as the defending champion in the overall World Cup. But now the ski ace has injured himself. That has consequences.

Bitter setback for Vinzenz Geiger: The German Nordic combined athlete has to sit out the start of the Olympic season – especially after the end of his biggest rival’s career.

“Unfortunately, during the warm-up for strength training, I tore three bony ligaments. Of course it turned out stupidly – bad timing,” said the 28-year-old from Oberstdorf. He is currently in the second week of rehab and is working on “coming back as soon as possible.”

As the German Ski Association announced, Geiger will be missing from both the World Cup opener in Ruka, Finland (November 27th to 30th) and the station in Trondheim, Norway (December 5th to 7th). Last winter, the two-time Olympic champion won the overall World Cup.

The next Winter Olympics will take place in Italy from February 6th to 22nd, 2026. After the resignation of Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber, Geiger was considered one of the favorites for the coming season.
