According to the Association of Dutch Municipalities, dog tax is an amount that is paid to the municipality if someone has a dog. The money raised goes to the general fund of the municipality. This means that the municipality can use it for all kinds of things, such as maintenance of streets or parks.

Abolish

It is not the first time that ELS has advocated the abolition of the dog tax. The party previously succeeded in ensuring that this became a target tax, but group leader Rob Kuipers does not think that is enough. He wants the tax to disappear completely. Kuipers informed the Noordhollands Dagblad that dog taxes are still levied in 113 of the 342 municipalities. De Telegraaf previously wrote that more and more municipalities are abolishing this form of tax.

Rates

But not all rates are the same, reports Pet Insurance. In Katwijk, people with one dog pay the most, namely 139.03 euros. Last year Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht had the highest rate, but this year the dog tax there has been reduced by 20 percent. According to Pet Insurance, the number of municipalities with dog taxes is also decreasing. For example, there is a decrease of 7% compared to last year and it is certain that the tax will no longer apply to six municipalities in 2026 or 2027.
