New asphalt, bright neon lighting and more space to overtake each other: the karting track at Gamecity Zoetermeer has been renovated. A team of employees helped with the demolition and a contractor built the new track within five weeks. The 42 karts had to be moved to a temporary storage location: “They were in the office between our desks.”

After thirty years, the only karting track in Zoetermeer is getting a metamorphosis. Assistant management Max Spriel and front office manager Joey van den Hoek get sparkles in their eyes when they talk about how they put their shoulders to the wheel together with the entire team. “Some had never held a bolt in their hands,” says Joey.

Race track 2.0

The new karting track has become bigger, faster and more modern. The extra floor provides more space for racing and overtaking. The hairpin bends are spectacular and the new coating provides a smooth driving feeling. The changing pink and blue LED lighting along the lanes creates more atmosphere. “It looks like a festival of colors,” says Joey. Spectators can watch the racers from the restaurant and from the stairs. There will soon be an additional spot because Gamecity is having an extra viewing area built.

Karts on their side

The plan was to convert the old version into the new kart track in seven weeks. “We dismantled the old track with our own team,” says Max. Three people lifted the karts, weighing 180 kilos each, and pushed them onto the side into the office. “We worked here for weeks between 42 karts.”

First ride

Bradley and Brandon from Alphen aan den Rijn get out of their karts with great enthusiasm after a 10-minute heat. The two avid karters have tried many kart tracks, but this one is their favorite. “It’s really fantastic,” says Bradley. “You can go full throttle and the corners are spectacular. You can overtake better because of more space and fewer people on the track. We are fans.”
