Crushing AZ and seeing Ajax and Feyenoord lose on the same day: it was a beautiful Sunday for PSV and the Van de Kerkhof brothers. The way PSV defeated AZ in Alkmaar made a big impression on the club icons from Helmond. “It was unprecedented, sometimes PSV even played ‘gallery play’ against AZ,” says Willy enthusiastically. And although Guus Til was the big man at PSV with three goals, the discussion about who should be the striker for the brothers has not yet been settled.

“It was a nice game with a great Til, if you score three times you are the man of the match,” says René in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant. “Til with Saibari is a golden combination, but I think Saibari and Pepi can also play very well together. I would still start with Pepi in the starting line-up.”

Brother Willy hardly believes his ears: “I think René should hand in his coaching diploma. As long as things go well, you should just leave Til behind. And this will continue to go well. If they don’t get injured, we will continue to play with this team all season.” Willy says it while he understands that it is annoying for Pepi that he has to make substitute appearances again this season. “But there are more players who think they should play. But they have to adapt,” he also says.

In the meantime, the brothers remain critical of the mistakes made at the back: “They have to be removed. If they make 2-3 you will have a completely different match.” René is especially unhappy with goalkeeper Kovar’s sloppy football. “He did it again, several times. It ended well, while it immediately gave us a goal when his colleague on the other side did the same.”

“Send referees on holiday for six weeks!”

One of the most striking moments of the weekend was Ajax striker Wout Weghorst’s goal, which was disallowed, much to his anger, on the advice of VAR. “I somewhat agreed with Weghorst,” says René. “Makkelie was on top of it and allowed play to continue, then you have to stick to your decision. But I was happy that he was rejected.” Willy has a different opinion: “It was a nice goal by Weghorst, but it was preceded by a foul. So it was rightly disallowed.”

René has been quite annoyed with referees anyway. “There was also a scandalous red card at Twente-Telstar. And that Martens at Volendam-NAC was really scandalous. They should send Martens and Makkelie on holiday together for six weeks and then let them start again in January. The referee corps is not in shape and actually not capable.”

The competition will be at a standstill next week due to the international break. The Dutch team plays against Poland and Lithuania and there is only one PSV player in the selection, Jerdy Schouten. Willy and René understand that Feyenoord player Luciano Valente is there for the first time, but René would actually have preferred to see Joey Veerman. “Veerman is doing well at PSV. He does what he has to do and I would have liked to see him in the Dutch national team.”
