The cabinet has decided to extend temporary controls at the internal borders for six months, until June 8, 2026. Minister David van Weel (Asylum and Migration) indicates that this decision was taken to combat the continued impact of irregular migration and cross-border crime.
Van Weel emphasizes in a letter to the House of Representatives that the importance of public order weighs heavily and is taking all necessary measures to protect the migration system against further overload. At the same time, every effort is made to limit the impact of border controls on the economy, traffic, cross-border workers and border regions as much as possible. To date, there are no indications that Dutch border controls have had a significant negative effect.
The checks are, as in the past period, carried out by the Royal Military Police on the basis of risk analyzes and within the existing capacity and budget. Foreign nationals who do not meet the entry conditions, such as being able to show valid travel or residence documents, are refused entry at the internal border. They must leave the Netherlands as quickly as possible.
In the period from December 9, 2024 to September 8, 2025, 470 foreigners were refused entry to the Netherlands and 230 people were arrested during internal border controls at the national borders with Belgium and Germany. The arrests took place in the context of migration crime, such as document fraud and human smuggling. Since July 28, 2025, internal border controls have also been carried out at airports. A total of 500 aircraft were checked in the period up to and including September 8 and 20 return decisions were imposed.
