After the crash of an MD-11 cargo plane operated by the US parcel service UPS, the US aviation safety authority has banned this model from flying.
The ban follows the accident in which the left engine of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, including the bracket, came loose during takeoff, the FAA announced on Saturday. UPS and its competitor FedEx had previously announced that they would ground their MD-11 fleets for the time being following a recommendation from Boeing.
The groundings affect about 9 percent of the UPS fleet and about 4 percent of FedEx aircraft and aircraft operated by Western Global Airlines.
Late on Tuesday afternoon (local time), the UPS cargo plane crashed over an industrial area after taking off from the outskirts of the city of Louisville in the US state of Kentucky. Mayor Craig Greenberg recently wrote on Platform X that the death toll had now risen to 13.
Boeing continued the MD-11 program after taking over McDonnell Douglas in 1997.
