It wasn’t magical football, but it was enough for the league leaders. SC Paderborn extended its remarkable winning streak in the 2nd league with its 1-0 (1-0) win at bottom club FC Magdeburg.
It was now the eighth game won in a row for East Westphalia. If this continues, Paderborn’s return to the Bundesliga will become more and more within reach. An early goal from Sebastian Klaas (9th minute) was enough for the SCP to take another three points.
Little shine over 90 minutes
However, what coach Ralf Kettemann’s protégés showed was not brilliant. On the other hand, the bottom team from Saxony-Anhalt played quite well, but did not appear to be suitable for a second team in the end.
Magdeburg’s interim coach Petrik Sander particularly struggled with a scene after almost half an hour, when the ball bounced on Paderborn’s Tjark Scheller’s upper arm in the penalty area, but the penalty that was initially indicated did not pass the VAR check. “A devastating decision”Sander complained in the Sportschau interview.
Great choreo for Heiko Horner
Things got off to an atmospheric start in Magdeburg, even before kick-off. The FCM fans had prepared an impressive choreo for the 25th anniversary of Heiko Horner, the passionate Magdeburg team manager.
Mood killer by Klaas
But the good mood in the stadium quickly took a damper because after a brisk start from the bottom of the table, the East Westphalians promptly struck. Steffen Tigges headed back, Filip Bilbija still had a foot on it, and so Sebastian Klaas was able to pull away unchallenged – 1-0 for the SCP.
First shot on goal for Paderborn, first goal of the season for Klass. “The goal was good for us in retrospect, but somehow not in the game. We had a lot of stress, the break came at the right time”said goalscorer Klaas to the sports show.
Bilbija out injured
Shortly afterwards it was over for Paderborn’s top scorer Bilbija – already eight goals this season. He had to go out with a muscle injury. Luis Engelns came for him.
Despite being behind, Magdeburg continued courageously, especially in…
Rayan Ghwas an asset, but the conversion of opportunities remained inadequate. Paderborn played very cautiously and only did the bare minimum offensively.
Successful administrative football
After the break, the guests became a little more risk-taking. Nick Bätzner could have increased the score to 2-0 early, but failed. Overall, the Kettemann men did well with their administrative football.
There wasn’t much to burn in front of their own goal, also because Magdeburg continued to be careless with their few opportunities. The game remained at a poor second division level. Team leader Heiko Horner would certainly have wished for a different result, but the Magdebugers shouldn’t ruin the anniversary party for their good souls because of it.
Magdeburg in Düsseldorf, Paderborn against Hanover
FC Magdeburg will be visiting Fortuna Düsseldorf on Saturday afternoon after the international break (1:00 p.m.). Paderborn welcomes Hannover 96 on Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m.). Then the SCP begins a series of games against the top teams in the league and it will be shown whether the team is really suitable for the Bundesliga.
