The municipality of Texel asked the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which manages the cemetery, to think about its maintenance. That is not such an easy job. The gravestones are always neat and tidy, in a well-maintained environment. To ensure that employees can carry out maintenance properly, the cemetery has been thoroughly overhauled.
“There are 167 war victims here, 123 of which have been identified. It is a place of peace, reflection, and above all a place of commemoration,” says Jeroen van Veen of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. “The Netherlands is truly a country of remembrance. It is very nice to see that people are so involved locally.”
