Karin Prien (60) was born in Amsterdam into a Jewish family with German roots, but grew up largely in Germany. This spring, she took office as Germany’s Minister of Education and Family for the Christian Democratic CDU, immediately making a statement by making no bones about the fact that she is a “Jewish minister.” On Sunday, at the invitation of the Central Jewish Consultation, she will be the first German cabinet member ever to attend the commemoration of Kristallnacht in the Netherlands. She does not want to stand by in silence as anti-Semitism rears its ugly head again.
