The Breda carnival channel Baronie TV is stopping after thirty years. The Baronie Media Foundation announced this on Saturday. And with this comes an end to programs such as the Barnaval Election, D’Optocht and Café de Baronie, but also to the nostalgic advertisements that regular viewers can enjoy.
The board of Baronie TV has mixed feelings about the decision they have made. Rising costs, fewer volunteers, no more broadcasting options via KPN and the new media law are killing the foundation. “We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Baronie TV over the years. We look back with pride on everything we have achieved together,” the board said.
Two well-known faces and co-founders of the channel are Pim van Ginneken with his eternal colorful wig and Ad Romijn with a painted egg on his bald man. Ten years ago, Pim quit the channel and in 2019 Ad decided to resign from his role as presenter. However, he remained involved in the board for a number of years. Even after the departure of this duo, the channel remained popular for its interviews and reports of special carnival moments in the Breda region.
A final look back
Many loyal viewers react with sadness to the board’s decision. ‘I’m really shocked by this… Very, very unfortunate’, ‘This is a tradition that should never disappear!’ and ‘Carnival without Baronie TV is an eternal shame’, as stated in the comments on Facebook and Instagram.
There will be a retrospective from the channel especially for these enthusiasts. “We will make one last program looking back on 30 years of Baronie TV. This program will be broadcast via various media channels during carnival,” the foundation says.
