The pressure on Simonis had increased considerably in recent weeks. With five defeats in the last six Bundesliga matches – and also a DFB Pokal elimination against Holstein Kiel, which is at a lower level – Wolfsburg found itself in a place in the middle of the right-hand row.

Nevertheless, the club management expressed its (temporary) confidence in the Dutch manager this week. “We will face the coming days together,” said technical director Sebastian Schindzielorz. “We have a very important match ahead of us. We want to focus all our efforts on that.”

Nice opening goal Wolfsburg

That paid off, because after half an hour of play, Wolfsburg took the lead through a real team goal. After a break through the right flank, Mattias Svanberg was the end station of a nice attack.

In the second half, Werder Bremen pounded on the door, but it seemed to have little effect for a long time. Until just under ten minutes before the end, Jens Stage headed in a cross from Yunikari Sugawara (ex-AZ). Victor Boniface and Sugawara could have hurt Simonis and Wolfsburg even more in the closing stages, but goalkeeper Kamil Grabara stood out, especially with his second save.

Only he had no answer to another attempt from Samuel Mbangula. Who was much more eager than the Wolfsburg defender in the last minute of injury time and shot home beautifully. Immediately after the goal, the director took Simonis into the picture. Whether these were the last images of him as Wolfsburg coach remains to be seen in the near future.
