It is a big day for many residents of Westkapelle. Twelve years after the devastating fire in the St. Nicholas Church, the monument to soldiers who died during WWI is back in its place. “There is a lot of interest. The names on the monument are still families who are present here in Knokke-Heist,” says Johan Cabooter, chairman of Davidsfonds Westkapelle.
The monument was spared the flames, but had to be temporarily removed for the reconstruction of the church. The memorial stone was damaged during the move. “There were many cracks in the natural stone monument. It is not easy to repair. Ultimately we succeeded, together with Perrine Franco who did the restoration,” says Alderman Piet De Groote.
