“A role model to this day”: HSV remembers Seeler on his birthday

More than three years after his death, football idol Uwe Seeler is unforgotten at Hamburger SV. The Bundesliga club commemorated the national team’s honorary captain on its website on his 89th birthday. “Uwe Seeler, the greatest HSV of all time, died on July 21, 2022, but he and the values that he embodied throughout his life live on in the hearts of all members of the large HSV family,” it said on the HSV homepage.
For people, Uwe Seeler is more than just a footballer, “he was and still is a role model, a legend and, above all, a human being.” Seeler was 85 years old.
HSV is using the Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund to draw attention to the importance of cancer prevention. The logo of the self-help organization “yeswecan!cer” will be visible on the jerseys of the Hamburg professionals on Saturday (kick-off at 3:30 p.m./Sky). The main sponsor HanseMerkur is giving up his place on the chest for the campaign. Together with the club and the organization, he is setting an example for prevention and early detection.

Attacker Viktoria Schwalm had to leave the pitch in pain shortly before the end of the game. Hamburg played the last few minutes outnumbered as the substitution contingent had already been exhausted.
