“It was a bit pointless”

The German record champions defeated PSG thanks to goals from Luis Díaz. However, the offensive star also saw red. One detail about the situation bothered Manuel Neuer.
Shortly before the half-time whistle, the Colombian attempted a “South American double tackle” after losing the ball, as Prime expert Mats Hummels called it. Hakimi had to be replaced crying bitterly on his 27th birthday, and Díaz was sent off after VAR intervention.
After the game, there was a lot of discussion about Díaz’s sending off. Some people’s opinion: clear red card, Díaz goes in far too hard. The opinion of others: If the person who was fouled, PSG defender Achraf Hakimi, had not been so seriously injured, it would have been a yellow card.
After his team’s successful evening, Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said about the scene discussed on Amazon Prime: “Of course, I only saw the situation from a distance, so I’m holding back. I was just told that it wasn’t a very hard foul, a red-worthy foul. I don’t know whether it was too hard, we’ll have to see that.”
What bothered Neuer more was an action by referee Maurizio Mariani that affected him. After watching the scene of Hakimi and Díaz on the screen, the referee summoned the Bayern goalkeeper to him. Mariani wanted to inform the Munich captain about the red card – which was incomprehensible to the keeper.
“In my opinion it was a bit pointless because he just told me the decision,” said Neuer, who explained: “Well, then he should send him off, but he doesn’t have to get me out of the gate now. That’s why we have the captain, who is on the pitch, and you can then communicate it with him.” At Bayern this would have been the deputy Joshua Kimmich.
