Darts star Gerwyn Price has lost a significant amount of weight – and reacted at least as clearly to a competitor’s skepticism. He presented himself confidently on social media and countered with humor.

Former world champion from Wales Gerwyn Price responded to criticism from Vincent van der Voort, who criticized his significant weight loss, with a revealing photo on Instagram on Sunday. “Worried about my weight? Don’t worry – I feel better than ever,” Price captioned the photos, some of which show him shirtless. The comparison shows his significant weight loss.

His post was apparently triggered by a podcast appearance by the Dutchman Vincent van der Voort. He said about Price’s transformation: “I thought there was a kid in the jersey. There’s nothing left of him.” Price used to be full of muscle, but now he seems almost skinny. Even though he emphasized that his statements were meant as “friendly advice,” he followed up: “He should gain weight again. He owns a fish and chip shop – that shouldn’t be a problem.”

Price, known as “The Iceman,” didn’t leave this uncommented. In an interview with the British media, the 40-year-old explained that he had deliberately lost weight – for his health and his performance on stage. “I continued to play during the tournaments, but slowly lost weight. It was never about losing weight quickly, but about well-being.”

Since the change, he says he has been using smaller jerseys and feels mentally strengthened. The late playing times in the darts circus – often late into the night – also made him eat more consciously: “At 11 p.m. there is often only fast food – but I just try to hold out until the morning.”

Price is also in top form when it comes to sport. Among other things, he won this season: four Players Championship tournaments, the Poland Darts Masters and the Baltic Sea Open. He is currently number one in the Pro Tour rankings – and will go into the Players Championship Finals later in November as the top seed. He wrote on Instagram: “Good year for me – number 1 on the tour. Only a matter of time until the next big title comes.”
