A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Economic Affairs told the AFP news agency that it was considering exempting “some products” from the export ban, but did not provide any further details.

China blocked chip exports from Chinese Nexperia factories last month when the Dutch government placed the company, which is headquartered in Nijmegen, under receivership. According to outgoing Economic Affairs Minister Vincent Karremans, this was necessary to prevent technological knowledge and intellectual property from leaking to China.

In response, China said it would not re-export completed chips from Nexperia to Europe, raising concerns among automakers. Several automotive industry suppliers and car manufacturers had to prepare for production strikes because the company’s chips are crucial in the cars.

About 70% of chips produced in the Netherlands are sent to China for completion and then exported to other countries.

It is not clear when the Trump administration will release the news. The White House declined to respond to questions from Reuters.
