Good news for athletes who love the dark chocolate. A recent one study published on Applied Sciences suggests that the “black” par excellence could improve physical performance in athletes. Not just a pleasure for the palate, but a potential natural supplement, thanks to the action of polyphenols and theobromine: compounds known for their antioxidant and vasodilatory effects.

Dark chocolate for athletes: the study

The work conducted by the University of Bologna on Bologna FC’s under-16 footballers analyzed the effects of consuming 25 grams of 85% dark chocolate daily for four weeks. The researchers evaluated performance parameters via GPS, levels of perceived fatigue and post-workout muscle soreness. The results? Surprising. The players who had introduced dark chocolate into their diet showed this a significant reduction in muscle soreness, better recovery between sessions and, above all, an increase in overall physical performance. In particular, there was an improvement in endurance tests and sprint speed.

how much dark chocolate to eat and how

Positive effects have been observed with a small daily dose, about 25 grams of dark chocolate over 80% cocoa. Better to choose it without added sugar and consume it away from training, perhaps as part of breakfast or as a post-workout snack. According to the authors, the benefits derive from cocoa flavanols, which stimulate the production of nitric oxide, promoting better vasodilation and an increase in oxygen supply to the muscles. Dark chocolate therefore takes on a double face: a sin of gluttony and a ally of well-being and performance.
