Ibrahim Maza and Aleix Garcia saved Bayer Leverkusen from a cup embarrassment. With their two goals shortly before the end of extra time, they secured the Bundesliga team a 4-2 (0-0, 1-1) win against the brave second division team SC Paderborn and a place in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.
The Werkself took the lead after a red card against Felix Götze and the perfectly converted free kick by Alejandro Grimaldo (60th minute). But Joker Stefano Marino equalized in the 90th minute in front of 15,000 spectators in a sold-out stadium and saved Paderborn into extra time.
SCP joker Sven Michel first scored there (96th minute), before Jarell Quansah (105th + 1st) equalized. Maza (120th + 2nd) made it 3-2 for Bayer, Garcia then scored into the empty goal and finally averted the penalty shootout that had been looming for a long time.
DFB Cup: VfB Stuttgart eliminates Mainz 05
Defending champion VfB Stuttgart can continue to dream of another triumph in the DFB Cup after a success against 1. FSV Mainz 05. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß’s team won 2-0 (1-0) and once again had the upper hand against the Rheinhessen team. Almost exactly 72 hours before the duel in the second cup round, Stuttgart had won 2-1 in the Bundesliga.
VfB defender Luca Jaquez put the guests on course for the round of 16 with a header after a corner against weak Mainz (6th minute). After the break, Stuttgart’s Atakan Karazor secured the final score after a counterattack (73rd minute).

VfB responded in its own way and took an early lead after a corner from Jaquez in front of 29,400 spectators.
Kaiserslautern wins at SpVgg Greuther Fürth
1. FC Kaiserslautern has given the troubled SpVgg Greuther Fürth the next dampener in their mood and can dream of a new cup fairytale. In the 1-0 (1-0) duel between the second division teams, Naatan Skyttä (12th minute) became the match winner for the 2024 cup finalists.
The brief appearance of Omar Sillah from Fürth was curious. The Joker, who came on as a substitute in the 90th minute, ran onto the pitch too early and was shown a yellow card. A little later there was a yellow-red for a foul. A total of 12,411 spectators saw the superior hosts in a hard-fought game that Skyttä steered in a successful direction for the guests early on.
1. FC Magdeburg throws FV Illertissen out of the DFB Cup
1. FC Magdeburg has continued its upward trend in the DFB Cup and at the same time ended the short cup fairytale of the amateur club FV Illertissen. The bottom of the second division celebrated an unchallenged 3-0 (2-0) success in the Bavarian regional list. The Magdeburg interim coaches Petrik Sander and Pascal Ibold remain unbeaten in the third game and can hope for a cup highlight in the round of 16.
In front of 4,157 spectators, Maximilian Breunig (12th minute), Marcus Mathisen (31st) and Noah Pesch (84th) scored the goals. After Illertissen managed the sensation in the penalty shootout against 1. FC Nürnberg in the first round, the outsider had no chance this time. With the game largely focused on one goal, Breunig was initially there with a header after a cross from former Illertissen player Alexander Nollenberger.
