A scoring error by the UCI commissioners at the World Track Cycling Championships is causing an uproar in the cycling scene. World champion Roger Kluge criticizes the correction that cost Germany a medal.

After the end of the Track Cycling World Championships in Santiago de Chile, a serious mistake by the UCI commissioners sparked further discussions. The three-time Madison world champion Roger Kluge has sharply criticized those responsible. The 39-year-old vented his displeasure on Instagram and spoke of an unacceptable approach to the scoring of the two-man team race.

Kluge and his teammate Moritz Augenstein were initially announced as third-place finishers after the final. A short time later, however, the officials had to correct the result – the Germans fell out of the medal ranks. The background was a calculation error in the awarding of points, which continued throughout the entire race and also showed incorrect intermediate results on the scoreboards.

The experienced track cyclist did not give the officials of the World Cycling Association a good look. “The misconduct of the UCI commissioners clearly influenced and distorted the race. This is simply unacceptable and must not go unchallenged at a world championship!” wrote Kluge verbatim. In his opinion, correcting the result after the end of the race is not enough.

“If we, athletes or staff, make mistakes, we face penalties or even disqualifications. We cannot simply say: We are sorry, please accept my apology,” he said in his post. He further emphasized: “But the UCI is allowed to do this and is depriving us athletes and the federations of a result in an Olympic discipline that would have helped both the individual and the federation to future progress. It is hard to believe that such a serious mistake should be eliminated with an apology.”

In terms of sport, Kluge is already looking ahead: Next Friday he will start with the Brit Ben Wiggins at the “3Days” in London.
