He led Schalke into calmer waters. In the long term, however, coach Miron Muslić can imagine a different task.

When Miron Muslić took over at the traditional club Schalke 04 in the summer, the club was at rock bottom. Just a few months later, the 43-year-old put the team on the path to promotion – and in the process became firmly attached to the club.

“I will remain a member of Schalke 04 forever, 100 percent. No matter how they part ways,” Muslić told Kicker. Schalke is a part of him and has a permanent place in his heart.

Nevertheless, the trainer pursues a different goal in the long term. “I want to be the national coach of Bosnia-Herzegovina one day,” said Muslić: “And I believe in that too. The basic requirements just fit too well – my history, my connection, the love for my home country. I don’t know when the day will be, but I’m looking forward to the day.”

Muslić was born in Bosnia and has Austrian citizenship. As a child, he and his family fled to Tyrol to escape the civil war. There he learned early on to assert himself. During his active career – mostly in the lower leagues – he got into the coaching business, initially in the youth sector. After stints at SV Ried, Cercle Brügge and Plymouth Argyle, his path ultimately led him to Gelsenkirchen.

Muslić sees the task at Schalke as a big challenge. He described the club as “perhaps the trickiest challenge in German professional football at the moment.” The 1-0 win against Darmstadt 98 on Friday was another step in the right direction.

The fact that he is suddenly the focus of a big club doesn’t bother him. Muslić explained that he remained calm – then and now. “I was calm four months ago when many people were surprised about my commitment and asked what this unknown person from Tyrol wanted to do here – and I remain calm when I feel that people have learned to really appreciate our work in just four months,” he said.
