Alexander Zverev has increasingly had to struggle with physical problems this season. In Vienna he now benefits from an opponent’s injury.

Alexander Zverev is in the semi-finals of the tournament in Vienna – without having to pick up a racket himself. His quarterfinal opponent Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands had to withdraw at short notice due to back problems.

“I warmed up to him, he collapsed on the last serves. I saw that he was getting back pain,” said Zverev after the unplayed match. For the 26-year-old, it is the first semi-final appearance in Vienna since winning the tournament in 2021.

In the fight for the final, Zverev will now face the winner of the game between the Frenchman Corentin Moutet and Lorenzo Musetti from Italy. “I’m really happy to be in the semi-finals, but of course I wanted to show a nice match. I was looking forward to the challenge, but it is what it is,” explained the Hamburg native. The favorite in Vienna is Australian Open and Wimbledon winner Jannik Sinner from Italy.

By making it to the semi-finals, Zverev has secured a place at the ATP Finals in Turin. After Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner and Novak Djokovic, he is the fourth player to qualify for the season finale of the best eight (November 9th to 16th). For Zverev, it is his eighth participation in the tournament in the last nine years. He already won the event in 2018 and 2021.

Following the finals, Zverev also plans to play in the Davis Cup finals in Bologna (November 18th to 23rd). Opposite Sky He said: “If I’m healthy, I’ll play,” but added that he still doesn’t like the format.
