The International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed some rumors according to which it had suffered a hacker attack in the summer which caused the personal data of some drivers, including Max Verstappen, to be breached. In a statement released ahead of the Mexican F1 GP, the FIA said the incident occurred “over the summer” and that new security measures had been put in place to protect the data.

The breach affected the FIA Driver Categorization website, where hackers managed to find information, including passport numbers and personal contact details of many drivers. “Immediate measures have been taken to protect driver data and the FIA has reported the issue to the relevant data protection authorities – reads the statement – and informed the drivers affected by this issue. No other FIA digital platforms have been affected by this incident.” The incident was made public by security expert Ian Carroll, who together with two colleagues had been able to access Verstappen’s CV, super-licence, passport and other data. Verstappen has not yet made any public comments on the breach of his personal data.
