The Foxes beat top club Veszprem at the last second in the premier class. But it’s not enough to reach the quarter-finals. The Berliners now have to survive the intermediate round.
The Foxes Berlin celebrated their sixth Champions League victory in a row on Thursday evening – but will probably have to pay dearly for it: Fabian Wiede was apparently seriously injured in the narrow 32:31 away win (16:12) against the Hungarian handball record champions Veszprém KC.
Keeper Dejan Milosavljev leads Füchse to victory
The 32-year-old backcourt player was unfortunate in the early stages, immediately grabbed his knee and left the floor on a stretcher to applause from the Hungarian audience. However, Wiede’s teammates defied the early shock.
Above all, Füchse keeper Dejan Milosavljev led the Berliners to victory with a total of 16 saves, while Danish world handball player Mathias Gidsel was the best thrower on the Füchse side with six goals. The reigning Bundesliga champions have “opened the gap” they had hoped for in Group A, as Füchse coach Nicolej Krickau said before the game.
The Berliners maintained their two-point lead over pursuers Aalborg HB with twelve points from six games, while Veszprém suffered their first home defeat of the CL season and are now six points behind the leaders.
Against the “800 quality players” from Veszprém, as Krickau had urgently warned before the game, it was always keeper Milosavljev who defended the lead with great saves. In addition to Wiede, Berlin also had to do without Max Darj early on, who quickly called it quits after three time penalties. World handball player Gidsel only turned up the heat at the end, when the Hungarians made things exciting again and came within one goal.
