MOSCOW (dpa-AFX) – The Russian President Vladimir Putin assumes that there will be another meeting between him and US President Donald Trump. “Now I see that the President of the United States has made a statement deciding to cancel or postpone this meeting,” he said on state television. Most likely Trump is talking about a transfer.
Moscow had already slowed down by pointing out that such a meeting had to be well prepared. After the cancellation, the Kremlin chief emphasized that the USA had suggested the meeting and the location. He himself agreed, but expressed concerns about the short preparation time.
After a phone call with Putin last week, the US President promised an imminent meeting in the Hungarian capital Budapest to discuss the war in Ukraine. He initially didn’t give an exact time – but shortly afterwards he spoke of “probably in the next two weeks”.
After the announcement of new US sanctions against major Russian oil companies, Trump announced yesterday that he had canceled this meeting. It doesn’t feel like you’re getting to where you need to be, said the Republican at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House. According to Trump, there will be a meeting between him and Putin in the future./ksr/DP/he
