Daniel Altmaier had no chance against superstar Jannik Sinner in the first round and was eliminated from the ATP tournament in Vienna.
The Kempen player was completely penniless at 0:6, 2:6 against the world number two from Italy. After just 58 minutes of play, Altmaier’s guest appearance in Vienna was over again. Altmaier was therefore unable to win the second duel in October against the superstar. At the ATP Masters in Shanghai at the beginning of the month he was also clearly defeated 3:6, 3:6 in the round of 64.
In the game in Vienna, Sinner dominated at will from the start and didn’t let Altmaier get into the game at all. The Kempen player didn’t really know what had happened to him when he was 3-0 down after around a quarter of an hour. Sinner, on the other hand, continued to excel, won the next three games and gave Altmaier a “whitewash” in the first set 6-0.
Sinner on a different level than Altmaier
The 27-year-old German recovered somewhat during the set break and opened the second round with his first win of the game – albeit a hard-fought one after several minutes. Sinner immediately countered with a safe pass on his own serve. What’s more: He then got the first break in the second set. The Italian’s next service game followed without losing a point.
The German still had nothing to oppose and you almost had to feel sorry for him – Sinner played too well and won the fourth and fifth games in a row. But Altmaier at least showed a small reaction and secured his second game in the second round. Afterwards, however, the winner of this year’s Grand Slam tournaments in Australia and England made it into the round of 16.
