New faces, different plot: The announced third season of “Euphoria” is already causing discussions
Three years have passed since the second season of the award-winning HBO series “Euphoria” aired. It has now been announced that the third season is already in progress. After production stalled due to delays, the show is now filming in Los Angeles under Sam Levinson. Now HBO has announced that there will be a new cast and changes to the series’ plot.

Season 3: What is known so far
The second season ended partly with completed plots – such as the sobriety of the main character Rue, played by Zendaya – and partly with open storylines. Some can be continued, others, like that of the drug dealer Fezco, inevitably end in a cliffhanger after the death of Angus Cloud. If you don’t want to be there anymore: Barbie Ferreira (Kat). This means that the production of the third season faces new challenges.
Little is known about the plot of the new season, except that there is a time jump that takes the characters from high school into adult life. In an interview with “Variety”, Nate actor Jacob Elordi (“Priscilla”, 2023) revealed that each character gets their own storyline: “I don’t know what the others are doing. I had my own, self-contained storyline. It’s like it’s FBI files. This way I can experience the series like a fan this time. I’ve never been able to do that before – and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Contrary to fans’ initial concerns that the original cast might not be there, HBO has now confirmed that no one will miss any of the main characters. The regular cast of Zendaya (Rue), Hunter Schafer (Jules), Jacob Elordi (Nate), Sydney Sweeney (Cassie), Alexa Demie (Maddy) and Maude Apatow (Lexi) will be seen again in the third season. The cast is also supplemented with new faces.
New cast members cause discussions
The total of 18 newly announced actors include Danielle Deadwyler, winner of multiple awards for “The Piano Lesson” (2024), Natasha Lyonne (“Orange is the New Black”, 2013-2019) and Colleen Camp (“American Hustle”, 2013). Also new to the cast are actor and producer Eli Roth and YouTube personality Trisha Paytas, joining previously announced faces like ’90s icon Sharon Stone and former professional footballer Marshawn Lynch. Details about their roles have not yet been announced, but are expected to follow soon as the premiere approaches and the release of a first trailer.
The signing of actresses like Natasha Lyonne and Danielle Deadwyler is largely viewed positively on social media, as is the continuation of the characters’ storylines after their time in high school. However, the additions of Eli Roth and Trisha Paytas in particular are causing criticism in fan forums. Roth has been criticized for racist depictions in previous films, while Paytas is simply seen by many as an actress not to be taken seriously. The loss of popular characters like Fezco, whose story had to be rewritten after Cloud’s death, also dampens anticipation for the new season. So the mood is limited, one fan even went so far as to compare the HBO production to the 2010 rom-com “Valentine’s Day” and wrote: “It gives the impression of ‘Let’s just overload this with celebrities and then no one will notice how sloppy the production is.'”
Will this be the final season of Euphoria?
There is also speculation about a possible end to the award-winning series. Insiders report that the show will wrap up after the third season. Given the cast’s different career paths, this seems plausible, but there is no official confirmation. Nevertheless, this is also being discussed online. The key question seems to be: is this still necessary? “Everyone who was ever interested has moved on to bigger, more lucrative careers, and by the time the new season comes out, it will already have been four years since the last one,” writes one user on Reddit.
Since its launch in 2019, “Euphoria” has been one of the most discussed productions on the US broadcaster HBO. The HBO production explores genre boundaries and creates a visual and emotional immediacy that has been well received by fans in recent years. “Euphoria” season 3 is scheduled to premiere in spring 2026.
