The HSV women shared the points with Carl Zeiss Jena in the Bundesliga. Coach Liese Brancao’s team couldn’t get past a 1-1 (0-0) draw at the Volksparkstadion on Saturday.
In a slow initial phase, an expected battle in the relegation battle developed. Hamburg tried to stay safe at the back and at the same time switch early. Apart from two long-range shots (one on each side), there was little to see in the first ten minutes.
HSV mainly on the left side
The game, which was manageable in terms of play, initially fizzled along. It wasn’t until the 15th minute that the HSV women were able to put the first pinprick. Viktoria Schwalm fought her way through on the left side and crossed the ball from the baseline into the center. Striker Sophie Hillebrand took the ball directly with her left from around six meters, but didn’t hit it properly, so the ball rolled past the goal on the right.
Two great chances from set pieces
The two best chances for HSV came from corners. In the 24th minute, Svea Stoldt took a corner from the left side long and high to the second post. Nina Räcke rose up and headed the ball just centimeters past Jena’s goalkeeper Jasmin Janning.
What works well can be repeated, Stoldt and Räcke apparently thought to themselves less than two minutes later. Another corner from the left, again Stoldt to Räcke – this time the central defender held out her left foot. Her shot flew straight into the middle of the goal, but Janning was there and just managed to direct the ball onto the crossbar with his fingertips.
Hamburg’s women are more dangerous, but for the time being they haven’t scored a goal
HSV initially appeared to be significantly more dangerous than the guests, but without the necessary penetration. Shortly before the break, Jena had a big chance: a failed shot by HSV keeper Larissa Haidner landed directly in Melina Reuter’s path. But defender Nina Räcke was attentive and made a decisive impact and so Reuter’s shot didn’t hit the goal. We went into the break with a score of 0-0.
Relegation battle without precision
Even in the second half, the game was bubbling along at first; for almost half an hour, very little happened on either side. In the 78th minute, HSV took the lead they deserved – also with the help of Jena’s goalkeeper Janning.
After a long ball, the goalkeeper came out early, but missed the ball. Substitute Christin Meyer set up for Melanie Brunnthaler in the middle of the penalty area, who let the ball drip with a very good overview. Victoria Schulz was there and aimed centrally at the crossbar. Jena’s goalkeeper stretched, but the ball slipped over her fingertips, giving Hamburg a 1-0 lead.
Jena shocks HSV late
Shortly before the end, however, the Thuringians scored a surprising equalizer. After a pass from Isabella Jaron on the right, substitute Rieke Tietz ran alone towards HSV keeper Haidner and shot the ball into the goal with her bottom right (89th).
This division of points is of little use to both teams in the relegation battle; HSV now remains in twelfth place in the table with six points, still four points ahead of Jena, which is second to last.
