“The Walking Dead”: The best songs from the zombie series

A series – just like a film – lives by its soundtrack, breathes the music it is given, evolves with the emotions that it only reinforces. “The Walking Dead” has a wonderfully strong soundtrack. To give you an insight, here are the 13 best songs, sorted by season appearance. Incidentally, the eighth season of the series has only been available on Netflix since the end of October.

Bob Dylan – Tomorrow Is a Long Time

“Tomorrow Is a Long Time” by Bob Dylan finds its way into the first season finale of the hit zombie series. The folk legend originally recorded the song in April 1963 at New York Town Hall.

Clutch – The Regulator

Clutch are difficult to assign to a genre, they have evolved so much since their founding in the early 90s. The men from Germantown in Maryland definitely combine hardcore, blues rock and even wonderfully distorted stoner. In the eighth episode of the second season, “The Regulator” from the 2004 album “Blast Tyrant” can be heard.

Wooden Shjips – Lazy Bones

In addition to Wye Oak’s song “Civilian”, another song worth mentioning is included in the tenth episode of the second season: In 2011, Wooden Shjips released their third studio album “West”, and shortly afterwards the song “Lazy Bones” on it appeared in the series with the walking dead. A slightly different, spacey and minimalist sound from the drone rockers from San Francisco.

Neil Young – Old Man

This classic by Neil Young has also had several prominent appearances. Including in the film “Space Cowboys”, as a cover version in the series “Californication” and at Heath Ledger’s memorial service. Young compares the life of a young man with that of an old man – and comes to the conclusion that both designs are quite similar. Listen to it in season three, episode nine.

Motörhead – Fast And Loose

In 1980 Motörhead released their album “Ace Of Spades” and it hit like a bomb. Although – according to frontman Lemmy Kilmister, who died in 2015 – they were too late for the first and too early for the next wave of metal. “Fast And Loose” is etched into vinyl on the A-side, giving Merle the proper soundtrack in the car in Episode 15 of Season 3.

Sigur Rós – Brennisteinn

The Icelanders are known to be more dreamy than they appear on their latest album “Kveikur” – in German: candle wick – released in 2013. Here they combine post-rock with shoegaze elements. A year after the release of the album, on which the song “Brennisteinn” can be heard, the musicians in “Game of Thrones” appear as musicians at the wedding of the cruel King Joffrey Baratheon and contribute their song to the first episode of the fifth season.

Gov’t Mule – Far Away

Gov’t Mules Sound can be found again in “The Walking Dead” – at the very end of the seventh episode of the fifth season. The band has its roots in blues and is dedicated to southern jam rock. Warren Hayne’s unmistakable, warm, raspy voice has been part of the band since its formation in 1994 and is quite simply characteristic.

Roy Orbison – Crying

Roy Orbison’s “Crying” underscores Daryl’s desperation as Dwight leaves. This happens in the third episode of the seventh season. Bauhaus – All We Ever Wanted Was Everything

Along with groundbreaking bands like The Cure, Joy Division and David Bowie Bauhaus laid the foundation for gothic rock to the pack – the music world gratefully accepted it. Bauhaus wanted everything and got (almost) everything. In the third episode of the ninth season of “The Walking Dead,” the zombies unite with Bauhaus’ wonderfully longing cry for everything.
